Keeping our independence of the system is so important. The volunteer position gives a platform from which we can take up the true position of the religious, the gadfly that provokes the system into questioning itself (sometimes). The Buddhist tradition of sangha, whether ordained or lay, as a corpus of people who are not economically dependant in conventional ways gives us this particular privilige.
Holy crap what an awesome interview.

I admire any religious leader that is willing to say "fuck" a half a dozen times during an interview.

Not to mention that he's right - about not being able to change things as part of the system, and about not accepting traditional Buddhist practice merely because that's how it's been done for thousands of years.

Thank you Danny for doing this interview.

Not to mention that he’s right – about not being able to change things as part of the system, and about not accepting traditional Buddhist practice merely because that’s how it’s been done for thousands of years.
