Save Darfur Coalition Extends Deadline for Fundraiser

by Danny Fisher

The Save Darfur Coalition has extended the deadline for a crucial new fundraising campaign. Their original goal was to raise $400,000 for the Divest for Darfur project by June 15th. Only $83,000 away from that goal as of the 15th, the organization decided to continue accepting contributions until midnight Wednesday, June 20th. You can make a donation by following this link.

In a mass email, Colleen Connors of the Save Darfur Coaltion writes:

Your gift will help ensure we have the resources to:
    • Keep the pressure on Fidelity Investments to fully divest its holdings in PetroChina. [Fidelity has only divested 91 percent of its holdings in PetroChina.]
    • Target more corporations like Fidelity to urge them to divest.
    • Encourage more states to divest their pension funds. Fifteen have already divested–let’s make it all fifty!
    • Recruit more activists to help increase the pressure on Fidelity and other corporations, and on Congress and the White House.

To underscore the importance of the divestment campaigns (and, indeed, all of the work to stop the genocide in Darfur), Connors includes chilling satellite photographs showing the destruction of the village of Bir Kedouas in Chad. (For an article about the Bir Kedouas images, as well as similar photographs of Ishma and Tigla in Darfur, follow this link. Amnesty International has also created a site devoted to gathering images of the genocide in Darfur from geospatial technologies.)
