International Human Rights Day

by Danny Fisher

Yesterday, December 10th, was International Human Rights Day.

At the Commemoration of Human Rights Day held then at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour launched a year-long celebration of Human Rights Day’s upcoming sixtieth anniversary. Fifty-nine years ago, the United Nations General Assembly adopted an advisory declaration known as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Human Rights Day honors this event and the values laid out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Like The Clash, I think it’s very important that you “know your rights.” As such, I’d like to begin my own celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of Human Rights Day by linking to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights online. Please do familiarize yourself with this document–it’s for you. Read it here.
