Sir Arthur C. Clarke (1917-2008)
Below are some reflections from the late Sir Arthur C. Clarke on the occasion of his 90th birthday this past December.
In my estimation, 2001: A Space Odyssey, which he co-created with legendary director Stanley Kubrick, still to this day stands as one of the greatest achievements in the history of American cinema. The film had a profound effect on me when I saw it as teenager. Upon hearing the news that Clarke had died, I thought of the feelings that came up for me during that first viewing. The film challenged me to think in ways I hadn’t before. It asked me to think differently about mankind, technology, origins, alienation, art, and lots more. In short, I was rocked. I’m very grateful for that experience–for Clarke’s work.
