Spiritual Guides (Including Me) Recommend Books at Monkey Mind

Our friend James Ishmael Ford has compiled a list of books recommended by “spiritual guides” at his blog Monkey Mind. I was pleased as punch to be asked to join a rather distinguished group in recommending a book. If you want to know what I recommended, you’ll have to go to James’ blog to see. And you’ll be glad you did–my reading list added a few great-sounding titles because of it, and I’m sure yours will too. Check out the list here.

The Stools from the Greensboro Woolworth’s

Last year, I wrote about visiting the historic Greensboro Woolworth’s, where, in 1960, North Carolina A&T State University students Joseph McNeil, Jibreel Khazan (formerly Ezell Blair, Jr.), Franklin McCain, and David Richmond invigorated the American Civil Rights Movement by sitting at the segregated lunch counter.

Recently, I attended a showing of old family friend Ed Simpson‘s new play Periphery, which is about the sit-ins. The show was wonderful, but one of the most striking aspects was the use of the actual stools the young men sat on back in 1960 (pictured above). They were center stage the entire show, but never used.

I felt moved and amazed to see the stools each time my eyes landed on them. I’m so glad that those in charge of taking care of them allowed them to be shared in this way.

Tell Congress It Must Do More for Burma

Here’s an urgent action from the U.S. Campaign for Burma:

Congress can do more for cyclone victims – by increasing aid to organizations who ARE working to help bring assistance to the Burmese people. During this time we also cannot forget the crisis that has been ongoing in Eastern Burma. There are organizations working to help them, but with raising food prices, they are struggling to provide the most basic and necessary relief for refugees fleeing the conflict, and this emergency spending bill can help ensure that those escaping genocide do not have to starve.

Join the 21,483 people who have signed a petition to Congress on behalf of Nobel Laureate and Fmr. Vice President Al Gore’s We:

    Dear Members of Congress:

I urge you to support tax incentives for renewable energy. These incentives help create jobs and lower greenhouse gases. They are the kind of policies that will help solve the climate crisis.
