Tell Congress No Acts of War in Iran

Please take a moment to sign this petition from CREDO Action:

We strongly urge you to change the language of H.R. 362 in the following ways:

    1. Remove all language calling for a military blockade of Iran.

    2. Add language supporting American diplomatic engagement with Iran to end their nuclear aspirations and backing of terrorism.

A military blockade of Iran would be a dangerous step toward war, and neither our nation nor the world can afford another Iraq. If the above changes cannot be made to H.R. 362, Congress must oppose it.

CNN: Dalai Lama Challenged by New Generation of Buddhist Activists

CNN’s Christiane Amanpour and Andrew Tkach report on lay and monastic Tibetan activists who disagree with His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s “Middle Way” approach to dealing with China and his willingness to accept mere autonomy. These activists feel that Tibetans must instead push harder for complete independence.

Also, don’t forget about Amanpour’s Special Investigations Unit report “Buddha’s Warriors”, debuting this Saturday and Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on CNN.

The Washington Post: Healthcare Workers’ Religious Freedom vs. Patients’ Rights

The Washington Post has the story on a draft regulation currently being reviewed by the Department of Health and Human Services. An initiative that came directly from the Bush Administration, it is “aimed at protecting health-care workers who object to abortion, and to birth-control methods they consider tantamount to abortion.” For some, the proposal offers a way for employees to opt out of participating in procedures they “find repugnant” and might be pressured to perform anyway. For others, though, the proposal makes things that much hard for women to exercise their full range of reproductive rights. Chaplains working in healthcare settings would do well to take note of this story and subsequent developments.

The Washington Post on the Beijing Olympics

The Washington Post reports the latest news in the final stretch before the start of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing: the International Olympic Committee is standing by China as the government renegs on its pledge to allow foreign journalists unfettered access to the internet. Meanwhile, George W. Bush is criticized from both the right and the left for participating in interviews with Chinese media outlets controlled by the Communist Party.
