Just a Buddhist Minister Trying to Benefit Beings

The Washington Post: Thai-Cambodian Conflict Enters Second Week

As promised, here is the latest on what’s happening between Thailand and Cambodia: The Washington Post reports that Cambodia has asked the U.N. Security Council to intervene in the Thai-Cambodian dispute over land near the ancient temple of Preah Vihear just as leaflets have begun to appear in Phnom Penh calling for a boycott of Thai goods. Thailand, meanwhile, asserts that Cambodia is interested in obtaining more land than just the disputed 1.8 square miles. Read the whole report here.

For More on What’s Happening Between Cambodia and Thailand…

…May I recommend two excellent sites?:

  • The peerless Professor Erik Davis’ deathpower. Erik catches everything Cambodia-related and, as an added bonus, writes in a wonderfully droll, user-friendly way. (Incidentally, the good professor has agreed to be interviewed for this blog. I’m slowly composing his questions, but you can look forward to a dialogue between us at some point in the future.)
  • The Southeast Asian Archaeology Newsblog has also been conglomerating news stories in a helpful and regular fashion. (And it’s a generally fascinating, cool blog to boot.)I’ll do the best I can to keep up with major developments (I blogged about the stand-off at Preah Vihear in a recent post), but both Erik and the good people over at the SEA Arch Newsblog are much better equipped to handle this than I.

  • More on the Fracas Over the Proposed Buddhist Temple in Newton, CT

The absolutely indispensable Buddhist Channel has more on the fracas over a proposed Buddhist temple in Newton, CT, including new pieces for the Fairfield Weekly and Zwire.

Regular readers might remember discussion of the proposed Newton temple in this post, this post, and this post.

AFP: US Congress Approves Legislation to Block the Import of Gems from Burma

Via the U.S. Campaign for Burma: According to the Agence France-Presse, the U.S. Congress sent legislation to George W. Bush yesterday that seeks to block the import of gems from Burma. As the report indicates, if this bill is approved it would “deprive [Burma's] ruling junta of hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue.” This is presumably part of the “focused” political approach to Burma that the U.S. has said it will take.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council is planning to discuss Burma on Thursday, as well as send special envoy Ibrahim Gambari back to the country in September.
