Don’t Let the World’s Leaders Forget Their Promises to Darfur

This from Amnesty International:

Since 2004, the United States has been a global leader in responding to the crisis in Darfur. Next month, when President Bush addresses the United Nations General Assembly, he should call on the gathered world leaders who have made a commitment to the people of Darfur to fulfill their pledges of peacekeepers, equipment, and funding for UNAMID. Last year, the United Nations authorized UNAMID, a peacekeeping force of 26,000 troops and police, to protect the people of Darfur. Fewer than 10,000 troops and police have been deployed. President Bush must continue to lead on Darfur by presenting the General Assembly with concrete plans for U.S. and broader UN action to ensure the full and speedy deployment of UNAMID.
