Just a Buddhist Minister Trying to Benefit Beings

Buddhists on YouTube

Not long ago, Sravasti Abbey started a YouTube channel to feature the teachings of the Venerable Thubten Chödrön. Take a look.

Incidentally, a lot of other Buddhist centers, organizations, and personalities have YouTube channels you might also want to investigate, including Bob Thurman, Sarvodaya USA, Dennis Genpo Merzel Roshi, the Buddhist Society of Western Australia, the Mountains and Rivers Order of Zen Buddhism, Dogen Sangha, the Hazy Moon Zen Center, Lama Surya Das, Buddhoblogger Ven. Loden Jinpa, the Amida Trust, the Pema Chödrön Foundation, Reggie Ray, Sogyal Rinpoche’s Rigpa, Tricycle, His Eminence Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, Brad Warner, and the Upaya Zen Center.

Reuters: Tibetans Resume Protests in Nepal, 72 Arrested

Reuters is reporting that Nepali police detained 72 Tibetan exiles as they tried to “storm a Chinese consular office” in Kathmandu today. These demonstrations effectively resumed anti-Beijing protests in Nepal “after a brief lull.”

Help Build a Clean Energy Future

This from We:

Call (202) 225-3121 and ask to be connected to the office of your Representative or your Senators (you can also look up their direct numbers using your zip code here).

    When you get connected:

    1) Tell the staff member that you want energy legislation to build a truly clean energy future. Tell them that we want to ‘Repower America’ with 100% clean electricity in 10 years. We must end our addiction to carbon-based fuels.

  • This means we immediately need Members of Congress to renew the tax incentives for wind and solar energy investments and protect more than 100,000 jobs in 2009.
  • Repowering America with 100% clean electricity will boost the economy, improve national security and reduce global warming pollution — let’s get going!
  • And if you want to inspire them further about how we can ‘Repower America’, you can ask them to support the following key initiatives:
  • A national energy efficiency upgrade — to shrink energy bills for families and businesses (at a time when fuel prices are on the rise).
  • A unified national grid to deliver clean electricity efficiently from wherever it is generated to wherever it is needed.2) Request a written response.

    3) Repeat for your other members of Congress. Then, take a moment to tell us about your call using the form below.
There are more than a million and a half We members. And we want America to make the switch to clean electricity — within ten years. It’s time we speak up and Repower America.

Thank you for all that you do.

AFP: South Korean President Apologizes to Buddhists Over Alleged Religious Bias

The Agence France-Presse is reporting that South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak formally apologized to the nation’s Buddhists today following nationwide protests against alleged religious bias by his administration. The trouble started almost two weeks ago, when more than 200,000 South Korean Buddhists, both lay and monastic, from almost all orders, gathered at Jogye Temple in Seoul to protest this perceived discrimination. It was one of the largest demonstrations in Korea in many years. Then, late last week, over ten thousand South Korean temples representing twenty-seven different Buddhist orders held religious services simultaneously to protest the government’s perceived anti-Buddhist/pro-Christian bias. For more on the events leading up to all of this, take a look at this post of mine from two weeks ago.
