The International Day of Peace, established by the United Nations in 1981, is devoted to the commemoration and strengthening of the ideals of peace. In 2001, the organization set 21 September as a day of the annual observance of a global ceasefire and non-violence.

People from all over the world celebrate the International Day of Peace in many different ways to show what a difference just one day of peace can make. In 2007, more than 100 million people were active in 192 countries. Initiatives to raise greater awareness of this important day are launched every year.
