This from the Associated Press: In an event that shows us just how bad things are in Burma, a Buddhist monk attempted suicide yesterday at Rangoon’s Shwedagon Pagoda in “an apparent protest against economic hardship.” The anonymous, middle-aged monk cut his own throat and was taken to a local hospital. One of the trustees of the pagoda said, “The monk said he tried to kill himself because he was desperate. He said he came to Rangoon to take medical treatment and he ran out of money.”
