American Red Cross Calls for Additional Board-Certified Chaplains to Provide Disaster Relief in the Gulf Coast
This from the Association of Professional Chaplains:
- In the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, there is extensive devastation across many areas of Texas. Those whose homes were destroyed continue to be directed to shelters, and over a million people in Houston alone are without power. Many chaplains who are APC members work in the impacted areas and stayed behind in the storm to provide spiritual care in their organizations. APC is only beginning to hear from chaplains in the areas impacted. No doubt, some of them and their families have suffered damage to their homes or are facing many days without power. The work of these chaplains in their communities is critical to the beginning of recovery, yet many are enduring their own hardships.
The American Red Cross has begun implementing a massive disaster relief effort to storm-ravaged areas and is calling for additional APC board certified chaplains to volunteer to serve as chaplains for two-week time periods during the relief efforts. “Chaplains who volunteer must be able to do good self care, serve as advocates for those in need and endure hardship conditions,” says Earl Johnson, volunteer partner, Spiritual Care Response Team (SRT) for the American Red Cross.
