Just a Buddhist Minister Trying to Benefit Beings

Looking for the Perfect Gift This Holiday Season?

For the last few years, I have done all my holiday/birthday gift-giving by donating to Amnesty International and other causes in the names of family and friends. This year, I’m going to take advantage of the U.S. Campaign for Burma‘s drive to “make a difference in the struggle for human rights in Burma through a special holiday donation to the U.S. Campaign for Burma.”

Donate here in honor of someone you love by December 10th and the campaign will send them a special card that will arrive in time for the holidays.

The Washington Post: His Holiness the Dalai Lama Urges Tibetan Exiles to Be Prudent

This from the Washington Post on His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s remarks at the conclusion of the meeting of exiled Tibetan leaders in Dharamsala, India, this week:

With the future of his movement at a crossroads, Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, warned Sunday of dangers if Tibetan political leaders are not cautious in their strategy toward China.

“In the next 20 years, we must be careful in our actions and planning,” he said in a lengthy speech. “Otherwise there is great danger to the Tibetan community.”

The Dalai Lama said it might be premature to cut off ties with China, which was among the proposals made at a week-long meeting of 600 of his countrymen at the headquarters of the Tibetan Government in Exile in this North Indian town.

“Wait a month” and “then we’ll see” whether the Tibetan side will seek future contacts, the Dalai Lama told journalists Sunday morning at a news conference at his hilltop Namgyal Monastery after the meeting ended.

His Holiness also said recently that he may appoint a regent to succeed him and that he thinks India is being “over-cautious” on the Tibetan issue.

Burma News (11.24.08)

[This post has been updated as of 6:30 p.m. EST on 11.24.08.]

Here are the latest news items on Burma worthy of your attention:

  • Right on the heels of their handing down of harsh prison sentences to about one hundred democracy activists, the Agence France-Presse reports that the ruling junta has called for all the country to back a controversial “road map” to democracy.
  • The editors of the Washington Post write that addressing the situation in Burma will be “a test of Barack Obama’s attitude toward promoting democracy” when he assumes the office of President of the United States.
  • In his blog for the New Yorker, George Packer writes: “In a just world, the names Min Ko Naing and Ko Ko Gyi would be as well known as Steve Biko and Adam Michnik.”
  • And this remarkable item from the Associated Press:
A lone demonstrator staged a silent protest in front of detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s party headquarters Saturday demanding the military government free all student activists as the country celebrated its National Day.

The holiday commemorates a boycott by Yangon University students 88 years ago in defiance of British colonial rule, a protest that inspired Myanmar’s independence movement

  • The New York Times Magazine: David Lynch on Talking about Meditation Online

Here’s an interesting snippet from the New York Times Magazine‘s recent interview with Academy Award-nominated film director and evangelist for transcendental meditation David Lynch:

THE NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE: I hear you’re starting an online series on transcendental meditation, based on your book “Catching the Big Fish.” Is the small screen a good format for discussing meditation?

DAVID LYNCH: Any format is a good format for meditation. Every single person has within an ocean of pure vibrant consciousness. Every single human being can experience that — infinite intelligence, infinite creativity, infinite happiness, infinite energy, infinite dynamic peace.
