The BBC reports that Cambodian judges have ruled that a former Khmer Rouge prison chief “Comrade Duch” will at long last stand trial for torture and pre-meditated murder.

  • The Associated Press reports that Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou has nixed plans for a visit to his country by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
  • Meanwhile, in Poland, His Holiness says, “When China becomes more democratic, with freedom of speech, with rule of law and particularly with freedom of the press … once China becomes an open, modern society, then the Tibet issue, I think within a few days, can be solved.”
  • The Agence France-Presse reports on the new Sino-Franco tensions over President Sarkozy’s first meeting with His Holiness.
