Just a Buddhist Minister Trying to Benefit Beings

My Article in the Latest Issue of Tricycle: The Buddhist Review

The Spring 2009 issue of Tricycle: The Buddhist Review hit newsstands today, and I’m very pleased to tell you all that it features an article by yours truly. The piece, which is entitled “Mindful Music”, is about my friend Ravenna Michalsen. (Regular readers may recall my interview with the Buddhist singer-songwriter for this blog in 2007.) I was also honored to be included on the contributors page for the issue, as well.

Tricycle has kindly made the entire piece–including the beautiful photographs by my old pal Sarah Ball–available for free online here. I do hope you will take a look. And, please, share any thoughts in the comments.

Get Well Soon, Your Holiness

This via the essential Barbara O’Brien at Barbara’s Buddhism Blog: The Associated Press is reporting that His Holiness the Dalai Lama is back in the hospital in Delhi after experiencing “discomfort” in his arms. Their full report reads:

The Dalai Lama has been taken to a New Delhi hospital for medical tests after experiencing discomfort in his arms.

The Tibetan spiritual leader’s spokesman, Tenzin Takhla, said Monday he is currently undergoing the tests.

The 73-year-old Buddhist leader underwent surgery in October to remove gallstones and had to cancel several international trips.

Takhla says he is expected to return to Dharmsala, where he has his headquarters, on Tuesday.

I’ll post new information as it appears.

Please hold His Holiness in your thoughts, prayers, and practice.

[UPDATE: The Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama reports that tests indicate that His Holiness is suffering from a pinched nerve. Medications have been prescribed and the patient was discharged. He'll go back to Dharamsala tomorrow.]

The Groundhog Day Buddhism Sutra

Over at The Huffington Post, author Perry Garfinkel adds to the growing canon of articles about Harold Ramis’ 1993 film Groundhog Day and the Buddhadharma. His piece “The Groundhog Day Buddhism Sutra” finds the Four Noble Truths in Bill Murray’s comic misadventures.

For other good pieces about Groundhog Day and Buddhism, check out the New York Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer. I’ve also written more than a few posts about the film’s relevancy for Buddhists in the past. Check ‘em out here.

Oh, and Happy Groundhog Day! (Apparently, we’re in for six more weeks of winter.)
