In a quick follow-up to yesterday’s post about His Holiness the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje’s new publication Environmental Guidelines for Karma Kagyu Buddhist Monasteries, Centers and Communities, the text is now available for free download at the official website of the Kagyu Monlam Chenmo. Get it right here. Thanks to my old buddy Georgios for letting us know.

Tibet News (2.12.09)

Here’s the latest on what’s happening in Tibet:

  • According to the Agence France-Presse, His Holiness the Dalai Lama is concerned about the possibility of further unrest in Tibet. “The Dalai Lama warned Wednesday of a fresh uprising in Tibet in the ‘very tense’ run-up to the 50th anniversary of the failed rebellion against Chinese rule that prompted his flight into exile,” they write.
  • In another report filed by the AFP, China responds to His Holiness by saying that everything in Tibet is “stable.”
  • In a related story, the Guardian reports that Chinese state media has announced the prisone-sentencing 76 people and detention of more than 950 since the unrest in Tibet last March.
  • Adding to that, the Associated Press today reports that Tibetan areas of China are now officially closed to foreigners.
  • Also connected to all of this, the BBC reports on the Chinese government’s “guided tour” of Tibet for a select group of international reporters.
  • NBC News, which had reporters among that select group, reports on the situation from their vantage point.
  • And the New York Times reports that “the Obama administration plans to realign the United States’ relationship with China by putting more emphasis on climate change, energy and human rights, widening the focus beyond the economic concerns of the Bush years, according to senior administration officials.”

  • His Holiness the 17th Karmapa’s Environmental Guidelines for Karma Kagyu Buddhist Monasteries, Centers and Communities

My colleagues over at elephant journal (with an assist from our good friend Nick Vail over at 2nd Wave American Buddhism) points us to His Holiness the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje’s Environmental Guidelines for Karma Kagyu Buddhist Monasteries, Centers and Communities. Do take a look. And, if you’re in charge of a Buddhist monastery, center, or community, I hope you’ll consider drafting a similar statement or statements. We need more of this sort of thing, I think–statements/solutions/suggestions in response to issues of the day.
