The Kiva Lending Team for Naropa Alumni

My dear old friend Derek Scefonas has started a Kiva lending team especially for alumni of Buddhist-inspired Naropa University. If you’re an alumnus, I hope you will consider joining here and making a loan or two.

For those who don’t know, Kiva is “the world’s first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend directly to unique entrepreneurs in the developing world.” Their stated mission is “to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty.” Find out more here.

Burma News (2.20.09)

Here’s the latest on Burma:

  • The Associated Press reports that the junta will release more than 6,300 prisoners starting Saturday, but that the generals “did not mention whether any political detainees will be among those released.” Human rights groups generally estimate that the junta has more than 2,100 political prisoners in detention.
  • According to the Agence France-Presse, Abhisit Vejjajiva, Thailand’s prime minister, has said that the problem of Burma’s Rohingya “boatpeople” is “a regional problem that must be dealt with at a regional level.”
  • The U.N. News Centre shares comments to the press from Burma envoy Ibrahim Gambari, who is fresh from his latest visit to Burma:

…So far, we have not seen tangible outcomes of my visit…but there seems to be some movement in that direction…As I told the Government, now is the time to demonstrate [Burma's] commitment to addressing concretely the issues of concern to the international community, particularly the release of political prisoners and the resumption of dialogue between the Government and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi…Our position has not changed. We’re not advocating elections in 2010 or any time. It is up to the Government and people of Myanmar to decide but we continue to advocate conditions that are conducive to free and fair elections when they do take place.
