Here are today’s Burma-related headlines:
Reuters brings us the news that a new U.S. State Deparment report says, “Poppy cultivation in [Burma], the second largest opium producer, has increased in recent years, along with production of methamphetamine and other synthetic drugs.”
More bad news: Reuters also reports that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) “will send hundreds of Rohingya boat people back to military-ruled [Burma], which rights groups fear gives them little in the way of protection.”
Speaking of ASEAN, the Associated Press managed to obtain a copy of a confidential document about the coalition’s new human rights body that will apparently “promote fundamental freedoms,” but lack the ability to punish rights violators like Burma’s junta.
