Here are the headlines about Tibet on this, the 50th anniversary of the Tibetan Uprising:

  • The Associated Press reports broadly on the anniversary and the worldwide protests it has inspired.
  • The AP also reports that “paramilitary police and soldiers swarmed cities and villages in Tibet and restive western China” today, apparently “on alert” for demonstrations and/or unrest.
  • Both the New York Times and the BBC report and reflect on His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s statement today.
  • Daniel Burke at the Religion News Service Blog points us to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)’s statement today on the anniversary.
  • The Agence France-Presse reports that U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is preparing to talk tomorrow with her Chinese counterpart, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi. Among other things, she is expected to broach the subject of Tibet. This on the heels of her statements on behalf of the Obama Administration which deprioritized human rights concerns in China.
  • Also, in an interview today with the AFP, actor/activist Richard Gere said, “Thirty years, 20 years ago, who would have thought there could be a black president of the United States? Things change rapidly — and it’s usually in crisis and tragedy that things change the most…I can see a time when there may well be a Tibetan-Chinese prime minister or president or whatever form of government there is then.”
  • Lastly, our friend in the Buddhoblogosphere Homeless Tom points us to Ann Curry’s exclusive interview with His Holiness the Dalai Lama for the Today Show. That interview is posted below, along with the program’s talk with Columbia University’s Robbie Barnett. (See also their coverage on the crackdown and China’s propoganda.)
