Just a Buddhist Minister Trying to Benefit Beings

My Accident

Twenty-one years ago this week, I suffered a terrible accident that kept me out of school for a while, required lots of physical therapy, and changed quite a few things about me. Over at her blog The Quilted Librarian, my mom has the whole story, as well as images of the artwork she produced out of that experience–like the quilt I’m pictured with above.

Jon Kabat-Zinn on Speaking of Faith

The mighty Krista Tippett interviews Jon Kabat-Zinn, Professor of Medicine Emeritus and founding director of the Stress Reduction Clinic and the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, on American Public Media’s Speaking of Faith this week. The interview is described this way:

We explore what our guest has learned, through science and experience, about mindfulness as a way of life. This is wisdom with immediate relevance to the ordinary and extreme stresses of our time — from economic peril, to parenting, to life in a digital age.

Give it a listen.

Also, for chaplains and caregivers out there, SoF did another show recently about Alzheimer’s that was extraordinary. You can download it here.

Watch Saint of 9/11 for Free Online…Right Here!

I’ve blogged previously about Glenn Holsten’s wonderful documentary Saint of 9/11. If you’re not familiar with the film, it tells the story of Fr. Mychal Judge, the gay Franciscan monk and New York City Fire Department chaplain who became the first officially recorded victim of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, September 11, 2001. Fr. Judge refused Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s request to leave “Ground Zero” with him, opting instead to remain with firefighters and those being evacuated from the towers.

I’m delighted to tell you that both SnagFilms and YouTube have made the full version of the film available for free online viewing. I’ve embedded it below and encourage you to watch it sometime. For chaplains in particular, this is an essential viewing.
