Tell U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon that He Must Send an Envoy to Burma to Release Aung San Suu Kyi Now

The U.S. Campaign for Burma is asking supporters to sign this letter to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

    Dear Secretary General Ban Ki-moon,

I call on the UN to take immediate action to secure the release of Aung San Suu Kyi, who is being detained in Burma’s notorious Insein prison for crimes she did not commit.

I urge you to take firm action by sending an envoy immediately to deliver a strong message to the Burmese regime calling for the immediate release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all of Burma’s political prisoners.

Aung San Suu Kyi is being tried for breaking the terms of her house arrest after an American man swam across Inya Lake uninvited to her house. Aung San Suu Kyi is the victim of a crime, not the perpetrator. There was an intruder in her house who refused to leave. Now, she is imprisoned in Insein prison just two weeks shy of the date that her current 6-year house arrest term was set to expire.

Aung San Suu Kyi has spent a total of more than 13 years in detention during the past 20 years. The United Nations has ruled that Aung San Suu Kyi’s detention is illegal under international law, and also under Burmese law. The United Nations Security Council has also told the dictatorship that they must release Aung San Suu Kyi.

I urge you to act now. The regime cannot be permitted to keep Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi detained forever.

    Sincerely,

Add your name here.

The U.S. Campaign for Burma has also organized a demonstration to be held at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, May 18th, in front of the Burmese military attache (2300 California St. NW, near Dupont Circle). For more information contact Mike Haack at mike@uscampaignforburma.org. Also, if you are interested in organizing a demonstration in your town or city, email Mike with the details and he will notify Burma supporters in your area.

Urge the UN and ASEAN to Send Envoys To Free Aung San Suu Kyi Now

This from The Burma Campaign UK:

Aung San Suu Kyi is being tried for breaking the terms of her house arrest, which forbids visitors, after an American man, John Yettaw, swam across Inya Lake and refused to leave her house.

Today Aung San Suu Kyi will have spent over 13 years in detention. The United Nations has ruled that Aung San Suu Kyi’s detention is illegal under international law, and also under Burmese law. The United Nations Security Council has also told the dictatorship that they must release Aung San Suu Kyi.

…Call on the UN and ASEAN to take immediate action to secure the release of Aung San Suu Kyi.

BREAKING NEWS: Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Charged, Will Stand for Military Trial

Here’s what’s happening right now with regards to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace laureate who has spent years under house arrest after being democratically elected as Burma’s Prime Minister:

  • The Washington Post and The New York Times have full reports on what’s going on. Here’s the bit from the Post:

Burma’s Nobel Peace Prize-winning democracy advocate Aung San Suu Kyi was taken Thursday to Rangoon’s notorious Insein Prison, where she is expected to be tried on charges connected with an American man’s intrusion into the bungalow where she has been under house arrest for six years.

Last week, military authorities said they had arrested a U.S. man, identified as John W. Yettaw, who had swum across Rangoon’s picturesque Lake Inya to reach Suu Kyi’s dilapidated lakefront bungalow and allegedly had stayed there overnight.

The authorities said that Yettaw was arrested as he swam away from the compound and that he was carrying his passport, some currency, a flashlight, a pair of pliers and a camera.

  • U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says she is “deeply troubled” by the news, and has called for Suu Kyi’s immediate release.
  • Amnesty International issued a press release saying that the U.N. Security Council should call for her immediate release as well.
  • U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, through his spokesperson, said he was”gravely concerned about the news that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been moved to the Insein Prison to face criminal charges…[She] is an essential partner for dialogue in Myanmar’s national reconciliation and [I call] on the government not to take any further action that could undermine this important process.”
  • The BBC profiles Yettaw, and the Agence France-Presse and the Associated Press report on him as well.

Urge President Obama to Act to Save Lives in Sri Lanka

    This from Amnesty International:

On May 13th President Obama made a statement condemning the bloodshed in Sri Lanka. In the last few days, more than 400 people – including more than 100 children – are reported to have been killed in a two-day bombardment of the 2 square kilometer area designated as a “Safe Zone” by the Sri Lankan army. This brings the total estimated casualty figure to more than 7,000 civilians killed and 13,000 injured since January. There are an estimated 50,000 civilians still trapped in the area. There are real fears that the bloodbath – as the UN has called it – will turn into a flood of misery after May 13 when general elections end in neighboring India. Call on President Obama to follow up his statement with actions to protect civilians in Sri Lanka’s war zone.

Send your message to President Obama here.
