Buddhism, The Dark Knight at The Journal of Religion and Film

by Danny Fisher

Well, I wish Buddhism and The Dark Knight were written about together at The Journal of Religion and Film, but alas…

Seriously, there are two neat articles in the newest issue of the Journal. The first considers The Dark Knight in light of Rene Girard’s theory of violence. I reviewed The Dark Knight for the Journal‘s last issue, and it topped my list of the ten best films of 2008 at elephantjournal.com.

The second piece, entitled “God and the Bodhisattva: A Buddhist Reading of Stranger Than Fiction…well, you get the idea. Marc Forster’s 2006 fantasy-comedy-drama, which features the unusual-but-nonetheless-winning combination of Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, Queen Latifah, and Maggie Gyllenhaal, got mentioned a little while back in the comments of a Shambhala Sun Space post about favorite Buddhist moments in movies. I’ve seen the film and like it a lot. Check out the trailer below. (And keep your eyes peeled for my review of Forster’s latest film, Quantum of Solace, in a future issue of the Journal.)
