Just a Buddhist Minister Trying to Benefit Beings

The Federal Trade Commission Says Bloggers Must Disclose Freebies

Via Dr. Scott A. Mitchell at the buddha is my dj:  Important news today that “the Federal Trade Commission will try to regulate blogging for the first time, requiring writers on the Web to clearly disclose any freebies or payments they get from companies for reviewing their products.”  The Associated Press continues:

The FTC said its commissioners voted 4-0 to approve the final guidelines, which had been expected. The guides are not binding, but rather interpretations of law that hope to help advertisers comply with regulations. Violating the rules, which take effect Dec. 1, could result in various sanctions including a lawsuit.

The commission stopped short of specifying how bloggers must disclose conflicts of interest. Rich Cleland, assistant director of the FTC’s advertising practices division, said the disclosure must be “clear and conspicuous.”

The Light of the Full Moon from Above San Francisco

IMGP0490

Just before boarding a plane back to Los Angeles from San Francisco (where I was attending the 2009 Buddhist Chaplaincy Symposium) this week, I received some sad news: my ordination master’s teacher died suddenly at the age of 100.  The abbot of the Mystic Dharma Buddhist Temple in Los Angeles’ Highland Park neighborhood, Sifu was the much-beloved teacher of my wonderful and also much-beloved ordination master Bhante Chao Chu.  I met Sifu only once, during this year’s International Order of Buddhist Minister’s meeting at the Mystic Dharma Buddhist Temple.  I will remember his eyes, which gleamed brightly–like the full moon that lit the path back to Los Angeles (see above).

Upon arrival, I was touched to find waiting for me an email from my new friend Gary Gach:

MOONLIGHT IN HUAI-YANG

The moonlight in Huai-yang tonight

so like that back home, so clear & bright !

& to think someone living thousands of miles away

is also facing the moon & looking this way

Please Keep John Daido Loori Roshi in Your Thoughts, Prayers and Practice…

26_3-DaidoThis from the Mountains and Rivers Order of Zen Buddhism‘s official website:

Dear Friends,

Over the last few days, Daido Roshi’s condition has changed significantly and it is now apparent that he has only a few days of life left. Because of this, the Descending the Mountain ceremony scheduled for this Sunday at Zen Mountain Monastery needs to be cancelled. There will be regular morning services on Sunday October 4, 2009 at both Zen Mountain Monastery and Fire Lotus Temple.

Meanwhile, Daido Roshi is comfortable and attended to round the clock by his wife, monastics and the hospice nursing staff.

Upon his death, we will inform you about the funeral arrangements and ceremonies, events that traditionally take place forty-nine days after death.

Please continue your practice during this time and keep Daido Roshi in your mind and heart.

With deep appreciation,
Zen Mountain Monastery
