Just a Buddhist Minister Trying to Benefit Beings

New Religion & Film Series Begins Tomorrow at UWest

film-reelI’m pleased to share with you all that a new Religion & Film Series will start tomorrow at University of the West, where I work as Coordinator of the Buddhist Chaplaincy Program.  I’ve been very involved with the creation of this series, which is part of a new bunch of activities on campus for both students and members of the local community.  This being the case, I’m excited and hoping for a good turnout.  You can find out more about the series (including the full line-up of films) at MahaSangha News.

Films will be shown on video, using either an LCD projector or a large screen television.  So, the screenings will be decidedly low-key, but it’s open to the public and we hope to see you there.

Tomorrow at 7 p.m., we will start the series off in ED309 with a screening of Peter Weir’s 1985 classic Witness.  The film stars Harrison Ford as a police detective in hiding with the Pennsylvania Amish.  I will lead an informal discussion about the film right after the screening.  The trailer is embedded below.

Way Cool Kicks

My news reader picked up this item for me today about a new shoe being manufactured by Komodo.  See the photo below.  The report says that 20% of the proceeds from every shoe sold will go the Free Tibet Campaign.

Today is Blog Action Day 2009

bad-300-250

Today is Blog Action Day 2009, and the focus this year is on climate change.  As part of my action today, I’d like to mention again about the Buddhist Climate Declaration–the pan-Buddhist declaration on climate change authored by Dr. David Tetsuun Loy and Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi with scientific input from Dr. John Stanley.

The effort was initiated by contributors to the new Wisdom Publications title A Buddhist Response to the Climate Emergency, and the first signer was His Holiness the Dalai Lama.  Over 5,000 people, from over 100 countries and most Buddhist traditions, have now signed the Declaration.  If you haven’t already, you can sign it here.

I’m proud to be one of the 62 Dharma teacher/scholar signatories on the declaration, and I hope you will add your name to this document.

And, if you’re a blogger, please take part in Blog Action Day 2009!  Visit http://www.blogactionday.org for more information.
