Just a Buddhist Minister Trying to Benefit Beings

A Gift of Dharma for 10.19.09

MR346-BHInspired by friends at the Tricycle Editors’ Blog and those on Facebook and Twitter, I’ve decided to start making a daily practice of highlighting a snippet of a dharma talk/book/etc. I also hope to be able to say a little bit about each teacher for the benefit of those who might not be familiar with them.

Today, I begin at the top, with a thought from one of the greats:  the late Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (pictured to the left in an image captured by the Ven. Matthieu Ricard).  A “scholar, sage, and poet” who served as head of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism from 1987-1991, Rinpoche “spent 20 years in retreat, wrote over 25 volumes on Buddhist philosophy and practice, published and saved countless texts, and initiated numerous projects to preserve and disseminate Buddhist thought, tradition and culture.”

Here’s the quote:

Keep in mind the many beings who are suffering in the same way as you are, and pray that your suffering may absorb theirs, and that they may be liberated from all suffering. In this way, illness can teach us compassion.

Shubh Deepavali!

I meant to post this yesterday for Diwali, but didn’t get around to it.  Happy Diwali, everyone!

At Buddhists’ Request, Taiwan Enacts World’s Strictest Law on Veggie Food Labeling

lisa_the_vegetarianRev. Heng Sure at Dharma Forest points us to a story from earlier this summer that I missed:  Earth Times reports that Taiwan has recently enacted “the world’s strictest law on labeling vegetarian food at the request of Buddhists and people who eat vegetarian for health reasons.”  The report continues that, as of this past July:

…Taiwan food manufacturers must use five categories, up from the current two, to identify the content of vegetarian food. Violators will be fined from 40,000 to 200,000 Taiwan dollars (1,200-6,000 US dollars), the Department of Health said.

Currently the labelling only indicates whether food is pure vegetarian or contains no meat but egg and milk. Now added are categories separating egg and milk as well as vegan.

[...]

The new rule also bans food manufacturers from labelling food as vegetarian if it is fermented – like chilly sauce – and its alcohol content exceeds 8 per cent.
