Rev. Danny Fisher

Just a Buddhist Minister Trying to Benefit Beings

A Gift of Dharma for 12.3.09

Another teaching today from the great mahasiddha Tilopa (988-1069).  I previously quoted him and offered a biography here.  This is today’s quote

At first a yogi feels his mind
Is tumbling like a waterfall;
In mid-course, like the Ganges
It flows on slow and gentle;
In the end, it is a great
Vast ocean, where the Lights
Of Son and Mother merge in one.

The National Board of Review Names Burma VJ One of the Top Five Documentaries of the Year, Awards It for “Freedom of Expression”

The National Board of Review, which is typically an early Academy Awards indicator, today named Burma VJ:  Reporting from a Closed Country one of the five best documentaries of the year, and also bestowed their “Freedom of Expression Award” upon it.  I’ve previously blogged about the film, which features the work of citizen journalists inside the country’s 2007 “Saffron Revolution,” here.

I was also pleased to see that the Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man, one of the very best films I’ve seen in ages, was named one of their ten best films of the year and earned the Best Original Screenplay prize.  I previously blogged about that film here.

Photos from Don Farber’s Visit to UWest

What better way to tell you about the great Buddhist photographer Don Farber’s visit to UWest than through photographs?  See them below.  I’ll just add that in addition to being both a truly remarkable talent and, as Shambhala Sun editor Melvin McLeod, has said, “one of the most important chroniclers of Buddhism in the twentieth century,” Don is also one heck of a nice guy.  I hope our paths cross again soon.  Enjoy the photos, and be sure to check out Don’s work at http://www.buddhistphotos.com.

Don presents some of the images from his new book of photographs of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The photo on the right is an amazing shot of His Holiness enjoying lunch with such Buddhist luminaries as the Ven. Dr. Ratnasara, the Ven. Thich Man Giac, UWest's founder Grand Master Hsing Yun, and Taizan Maezumi Roshi.

Don answers a student's question.

Don signs photos and chats with some of our students after the lecture.
