Regarding What Brit Hume Said…
by Danny Fisher
Thanks to a post by our pal in the Buddhoblogosphere and my editor over at Shambhala Sun Space, Mr. Rod Meade Sperry, as well as several reactions at other Buddhist blogs, I think most everyone reading this blog is probably aware by now of some rather repugnant and certainly ignorant comments made by Fox News’ Brit Hume regarding Tiger Woods’ Buddhist practice. Rather than attempt to rant mindfully (a paradoxical proposition if ever there was one), I’ll simply present one view of Christianity and religious pluralism from a Buddhist perspective: His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s…
I do not personally advocate seeking a universal religion; I don’t think it advisable to do so. And if we proceed too far in drawing these parallels and ignoring the differences, we might end up doing exactly that! …One teaching or one view will not satisfy. To some people Christianity is much more effective, in some other case, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, or Zoroastrianism. …I can say that for me personally, Buddhism is best because the Buddhist approach is most effective to me. This does not mean Buddhism is best for everyone. Now, for my Christian brother or sister, Christianity is best for him or for her. Here, the concept of one religion, one truth, is very relevant for the individual, but for the community it must be several truths, several religions.

NIce. I recently had a conversation with a Priest “in training” who told me that I was close minded because I would not entertain the idea that perhaps there was only ONE truth. I thought that was really funny and preceded to show the illogicalness of there being only one truth. Needless to say, he was not amused. I think the Dalai Lama would have done a better job explaining it. Thanks Danny.
I don’t think there is any harm in principle for suggesting to Woods that one religion might suit him better. But that’s for someone who knows him to suggest privately and tactfully – not at all in the way Hume did it.
This is a fantastic quote. It is very easy to fall into the idea that there is one truth or one way. While it is essential to connect to the other’s humanity, we each may have our own unique spritual paths.

While I am troubled by those who are so very very certain that theirs is certainly THE one truth, I am just as troubled by the idea of several truths, relative truth.
On many matters there IS just that ONE truth, it is just uncertain what it is.
I like many Christians. I hang with a lot of them these days. A lot of evidence came together this decade past regarding how the Bible was put together. The case that the Old and New Testaments are the revealed voice of God and that Christ fulfills prophesy looks increasingly weak to me. Christianity is a curious entrapping and illogical religion that includes a daunting amount of hate talk.
Christianity is probably NOT best for anybody. On that I am uncertain, but almost certain.

TOM STRONG, how was the bible put together? The books of the bible that were put together by Constantine were the books that were being read by Christians long before Him.
These books had to be validated by eyewitnesses, people who knew the truth. Other books had not been validated so there were not in circulation.
Dont be weak, STAND UP AND CONTEND FOR YOUR FAITH!
Christianity is the best for everyone because it is Christ who paid the price. Being a human you are quite aware of the failures, we could not keep the Law so Christ did it for you and I and took the penalty for our sin.
It should make sense to you if you are a Christian, since it does not, go back to the cross and ask God to give you understanding.
