FBI Investigating Embezzlement of $450,000 from Naropa University by an Employee – How You Can Help the Campus

This depressing news via our buddy and editor Waylon Lewis at elephant journal:

Naropa University, already engaged in responsible, necessary cuts, [was recently] alerted [by the F.B.I. to the embezzlement] of nearly half a million dollars [by an employee in Accounts Payable].

It’s sad news when someone rationalizes the stealing of money from a relatively small institution dedicated explicitly to the greater good, contemplative education. For an institution of Naropa’s size, $450,000 over two years could have paid for so many scholarships, so many increased salaries for teachers, so many repairs…it hurts to think about it.

Way, always quick to find ways to help in any situation, lets us know how in this situation:

Today’s quote is from the Venerable Bokar Rinpoche (1940-2004), holder of both the Shangpa and Karma Kagyu lineages of Tibetan Buddhism, tutor to His Eminence Yangsi Kalu Rinpoche, and founder of Bokar Ngedon Chokhor Ling. This is it:

Like birds landing on a tree top together, and then dispersing,

We are together for a very short time,

So it makes sense to live in harmony, in unconditional friendship.

“Strung Up Buddhists”

blessing stringFollowing a bunch of news stories about the Buddhist bracelet worn by Tiger Woods, Arun of Angry Asian Buddhist fame blogs for Dharma Folk about the meaning of the bracelet for him.

The string I wear on my wrist is a symbol of my connection to the Buddhist community. After all, I wear it because I knelt before a monk who tied it on my wrist. It’s a reminder when I cook food, when I wash my hands, when I type at my computer. With the string, I feel both a closeness and a responsibility to the refuges I willingly take in Lord Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha. If Buddhism is implicitly embedded in my identity, then this string helps make it explicit, both to myself and to others.
