Burma VJ Wins a 2010 Media Award from Amnesty International
by Danny Fisher
The Oscar-nominated Burma VJ: Reporting from a Closed Country, which features the work of citizen journalists inside the title country’s 2007 “Saffron Revolution,” has just received one of Amnesty International’s 2010 Media Awards. Read about it and other winners here.
As part of my work blogging for Shambhala Sun Space, I have interviewed a few people close to the production:
- First, I interviewed U Pyinya Zawta, a founding member and executive director of the All Burma Monks’ Alliance–one of the leaders of the “Saffron Revolution,” who now tours the U.S. (often with the film) talking about conditions inside Burma. We spoke just before he attended this year’s Academy Awards ceremony with the filmmakers.
- Second, The Democratic Voice of Burma’s Aye Chan Naing and Burma VJ‘s Oscar-nominated director Anders Østergaard and I spoke on the occasion of the HBO premiere of the film.
