Today’s quote is yet another from His Holiness the Dalai Lama–the one and only–whom I first quoted and wrote a short biography for in this post.  This is it–courtesy, once again, of my Insight from the Dalai Lama Desk Calendar:

[It] is quite clear to me that the moment you think only of yourself, the focus of your whole reality narrows, and because of this narrow focus, uncomfortable things can appear huge and bring you fear and discomfort and a sense of feeling overwhelmed by misery.  The moment you think of others with a sense of caring, however, your view widens. Within that wider perspective, your own problems appear to be of little significance, and this makes a big difference.

NEWS: Nelson Mandela’s Great-Granddaughter Killed in Car Crash

Very, very sad news amid the hubbub surrounding the World Cup: The thirteen-year-old great-granddaughter of Nobel Peace laureate and former South African president Nelson Mandela was killed in a car crash last night while returning from the opening concert in Soweto. The driver of the other car, who has not yet been identified, was apparently driving drunk.

President Mandela has predictably cancelled his much-touted appearance at the World Cup.

My thoughts and prayers are with “Mandiba” and his family now as they mourn the loss of Zenani, and I’ve been doing tonglen for them this morning.  Here are some basic instructions in the practice if you’d like to join me.  (It’s not a bad practice to do amid the oil spill and other world crises as well.)
