“Buddhist Vigilantes to ‘Disrobe’ Bogus Monks Who Fleece the Public”

Image via The Star.

Wow…

A Buddhist group here has set up its own vigilante corp to stop those portraying themselves as monks from soliciting money from the public.

The Sangha Sanctity Protection Centre (SSPC) said its “monk police” believed an organised syndicate was behind the culprits who walked in saffron robes through the populated streets of Malacca and preyed on the generosity of the public.

These foreigners hand out amulets which they claim have spiritual powers to bestow prosperity and health to those who make donations.

Am I the only one who thinks these “Buddhist vigilantes” need a theme song immediately? Preferably one that’s as much like this as possible…

A Gift of Dharma for 6.21.11

Today’s quote comes from Siddhartha Gautama (circa fifth and/or sixth century B.C.E.) — the historical Buddha and de facto progenitor of the Buddhist religions. This is it:

Monk, there is the case where a monk studies the Dhamma: dialogues, narratives of mixed prose and verse, explanations, verses, spontaneous exclamations, quotations, birth stories, amazing events, question & answer sessions. He spends the day in Dhamma-study. He neglects seclusion. He doesn’t commit himself to internal tranquillity of awareness. This is called a monk who is keen on study, not one who dwells in the Dhamma.

Then there is the case where a monk takes the Dhamma as he has heard & studied it and teaches it in full detail to others. He spends the day in Dhamma-description. He neglects seclusion. He doesn’t commit himself to internal tranquillity of awareness. This is called a monk who is keen on description, not one who dwells in the Dhamma.

Then there is the case where a monk takes the Dhamma as he has heard & studied it and recites it in full detail. He spends the day in Dhamma-recitation. He neglects seclusion. He doesn’t commit himself to internal tranquillity of awareness. This is called a monk who is keen on recitation, not one who dwells in the Dhamma.

Then there is the case where a monk takes the Dhamma as he has heard & studied it and thinks about it, evaluates it, and examines it with his intellect. He spends the day in Dhamma-thinking. He neglects seclusion. He doesn’t commit himself to internal tranquillity of awareness. This is called a monk who is keen on thinking, not one who dwells in the Dhamma.

This from the U.S. Campaign for Burma:

We are excited to inform you that tomorrow, Wednesday June 22, Aung San Suu Kyi will for the first time address an U.S. Congressional hearing on Burma. Congressman Donald Manzullo (R-IL), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific will hold a hearing entitled “Piercing Burma’s Veil of Secrecy: The Truth Behind the Sham Election and the Difficult Road Ahead.”

Aung San Suu Kyi prerecorded a video address that will be shown at the hearing. In addition, USCB’s Executive Director Aung Din and Dr. Chris Beyrer, Director of Johns Hopkins Center for Public Health and Human Rights will also testify. The hearing will be broadcast live via webcast here: http://www.hcfa.house.gov.

Watch online and follow our live twitter feed of the hearing at http://twitter.com/#!/uscb.

The timing of the hearing could not be more urgent, as Burma’s regime continues to launch military offensives against ethnic resistance groups in the northern part of Burma in Shan State, and Kachin State, that have driven nearly 20,000 refugees into hiding along the China-Burma border and into China.

EVENT DETAILS:
Location: Rayburn House Office Building, Committee on Foreign Affairs Room 2172
Date: Wednesday, June 22, 2011
Time: 12:30 pm
